IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 guide

This guide covers the specific product IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1. It is an approved two-skill Secure English Language Test (SELT): Speaking and Listening only, taken in person at an approved location with an examiner and another test taker. It reports Pass or Fail, not an IELTS band. Other approved A1 SELTs have different formats.

Test format

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 is one 16 to 18 minute session with no break: Phase 1a personal questions (4–5 minutes), Phase 1b partner questions (5 minutes), Phase 2a listening (4 minutes), then Phase 2b paired discussion (3–4 minutes). In the official samples, each candidate answers one gist question about one assigned recording, then two detail questions about the other recording after both recordings are replayed. The practice below adapts the current official Sample A and B task frames.

Speaking format (IELTS Life Skills A1)

The examiner asks simple questions about you: name, nationality, work or study, where you live, and free time. Answer clearly in short sentences — one question at a time, not a long speech.

Phase 1a model (examiner questions)

Examiner: What is your name? Candidate: My name is Sara. Examiner: Where are you from? Candidate: I am from Pakistan. Examiner: Do you work or study? Candidate: I work. I work in a shop. Examiner: Where do you live? Candidate: I live in Manchester. Near the station. Examiner: What do you do in your free time? Candidate: I walk in the park. Sometimes I watch TV.

Official Sample A frame: both candidates get 1½ minutes to prepare questions. Candidate A then asks Candidate B about neighbours for up to 2 minutes; Candidate B then asks Candidate A about a favourite time of year for up to 2 minutes.

Official Sample B uses the same mechanics with different topics: Candidate A asks about things Candidate B reads; Candidate B asks how Candidate A learns English.

Official Sample A: after listening, talk together about places you like to visit at the weekend and what you do there. Respond to your partner and keep the discussion moving; the examiner may prompt if the interaction stalls or leaves the topic.

Phase 2b model (Sample A — weekend places)

A: At the weekend I like the park. I walk with my family. B: I like the town. I go shopping and see a film. A: Who do you go with? B: My sister. Do you like new places? A: Yes. New places are interesting. Where do you go when it rains? B: I stay at home. I watch TV.

Official Sample B uses the same paired-discussion mechanics on parties and festivals you enjoy.

Phase 2b model (Sample B — parties and festivals)

A: I like family parties. We eat food and talk. B: Me too. On my birthday we have a cake. A: Do you like going to parties? B: Yes, small parties. Is there an important festival in your country? A: Yes. We visit family and wear new clothes. B: What food do you eat? A: Rice and sweet cakes. And you? B: We eat meat and bread.

GOV.UK lists Trinity separately from IELTS Life Skills. Trinity's A1 product is GESE Grade 2 (not branded Life Skills): one to one, about 6 minutes, UK centres only. Do not reuse IELTS Life Skills timing or fee notes for Trinity.

  • Practise asking questions, not only answering them.
  • Keep language simple, clear, and interactive with your partner.
  • Your partner's level does not decide your result. Official materials say each candidate is assessed on their own performance.

Before you book

Confirm the visa English level, book a UKVI SELT product, and pick a provider you can actually sit. A wrong booking wastes money even if your English is fine.

1. Visa level

Match A1, A2, or B1 to your route

If a first family visa applicant must prove English by a test, GOV.UK requires at least A1. After 2.5 years, someone who previously passed only A1 may need at least A2; settlement or citizenship normally requires B1 where an English test is required. Exemptions and other ways to prove English exist, so check your route before paying.

2. Product name

Book IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1

Ordinary non-UKVI IELTS is not the approved Life Skills SELT product. Book IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 through an official provider channel and confirm the test location is UKVI-approved.

3. Location

Centre-based only for UKVI

Home Office SELTs are taken at approved test locations. At-home or DIY remote exams are not accepted as SELTs. Linguistic Academy can coach you remotely; the official exam still happens at a centre.

4. Alternatives

Other A1 Speaking and Listening SELTs exist

Approved options also include LanguageCert International ESOL SELT A1 S&L, PTE Home A1, Trinity GESE Grade 2 (UK centres only), and outside the UK Skills for English UKVI A1. Formats and fees differ. This guide focuses on IELTS Life Skills A1.

Trinity GESE Grade 2 is a separate A1 SELT: one to one, 6 minutes, and available as a SELT only in the UK. IELTS Life Skills A1, LanguageCert, and PTE Home are approved in and outside the UK; PSI Skills for English UKVI A1 is approved outside the UK only.

Centre day: ID, venue, and conduct

This is not an at-home laptop exam. The centre runs the room and the audio. Your job is identity, arrival, and following venue rules so the SELT sitting stays valid.

Technical requirements

Confirm the visa English level

Use GOV.UK guidance for your route before you pay. Do not book A1 if your application already requires A2 or B1.

Book the UKVI / SELT product online

Book through the official provider site (IELTS for UKVI Life Skills or another approved A1 S&L SELT). Do not rely on informal centre emails alone.

Choose an approved centre

Use the current GOV.UK approved SELT location lists and confirm availability on the provider website. You may need to travel. GOV.UK says you should usually be able to take a test within 28 days of booking.

Match your ID to the booking

Book in the name shown on your accepted identity evidence. GOV.UK has location-specific rules for travel documents, eVisas, EEA identity cards, and government photo ID. In the UK, an expired BRP/BRC may be usable within 24 months of expiry or until 31 December 2026, whichever is sooner. Check the live list before booking.

Arrive early and follow staff flow

Complete identity checks, store restricted items as instructed, and enter the paired Life Skills session ready to speak from the first minute.

Keep your unique reference

After you pass, save the UKVI number (IELTS) or other provider reference. GOV.UK says to enter it in the application; results are verified online and you do not submit a test-result document.

Room and conduct rules

Accepted identity evidenceBring or provide the exact identity evidence allowed for your location, and make sure its details match the booking. Without accepted identity evidence, GOV.UK says you cannot take the test.
Approved locationThe test must be a SELT at an approved location. A non-UKVI product or a home version will not meet the SELT requirement.
Paired candidateYou will speak with another candidate. Their performance does not decide your Pass or Fail.
Speak to communicateAsk for clarification if you need it. Answer clearly, add a relevant detail when you can, and respond to your partner so the interaction keeps moving.
No reading or writing tasksLife Skills A1 assesses Speaking and Listening only. Do not book a four-skill exam unless your route truly needs it.
Venue conductFollow centre rules on phones, notes, and room behaviour. Staff instructions override prep habits from home practice.
Do not book non-UKVI IELTS. Do not assume an at-home exam counts as a SELT. Do not confuse A1 (first family English) with A2 extension or B1 settlement levels.

Pass marks and approved A1 providers

IELTS Life Skills A1 is Pass or Fail with no band score. A certified examiner assesses obtaining information, conveying information, speaking to communicate, and engaging in discussion across the single session. Other approved A1 Speaking and Listening SELTs use their own formats and pass rules.

Results, validity, and retakes

Plan around result release and check the evidence rule for your route. The general SELT rule is two years, but GOV.UK family-visa guidance allows some results from a previous successful application to be reused.

Frequently asked questions

What is A1 Life Skills?

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 is one approved Speaking and Listening SELT for certain UK visa routes. It lasts 16 to 18 minutes at an approved location and reports Pass or Fail. LanguageCert, PTE Home, Trinity GESE, and PSI Skills for English are separate products with different formats.

Is IELTS Life Skills A1 available at home?

No. For UKVI, it must be a SELT at an approved test location. At-home versions are not accepted as SELTs. Prep can be remote; the exam sitting is centre-based.

Who needs A1 Speaking and Listening?

Routes whose current minimum can be A1 Speaking and Listening include a first family visa application, Representative of an Overseas Business, International Sportsperson over 12 months, and family members of HM Armed Forces. A test may not be needed if an exemption or another accepted way to prove English applies.

Does Life Skills A1 include Reading and Writing?

No. IELTS Life Skills A1 assesses Speaking and Listening only. Family routes that ask for speaking and listening do not need reading and writing scores for that requirement.

How is the test structured?

Phase 1a is 4–5 minutes of personal questions; Phase 1b is 5 minutes for prepared partner questions; Phase 2a is 4 minutes with two recordings played twice; Phase 2b is a 3–4 minute paired discussion. In the official samples, each candidate gives one assigned gist answer and two detail answers.

Is Trinity GESE Grade 2 the same as Life Skills?

No. Trinity GESE Grade 2 is a separate approved A1 Speaking and Listening SELT. It is about 6 minutes, one to one, UK centres only, and is not branded Life Skills. Fees and retake offers are also separate from IELTS.

What score do I need to pass?

IELTS Life Skills A1 is Pass or Fail with no band score. LanguageCert A1 S&L SELT requires 60 out of 100. PTE Home A1 and PSI Skills for English UKVI A1 also use pass outcomes.

How long are results valid for a visa application?

The general GOV.UK SELT rule is that the result was awarded in the 2 years before application. Family-route guidance has reuse provisions after a successful application, including for A2 or higher at extension and B1 or higher at settlement, if the qualification remains approved and is not withdrawn.

Can I retake if I fail?

Yes. IELTS says there is no restriction on retaking Life Skills after a Fail. After a Pass, you cannot retake Life Skills at the same level for 2 years. A retake is another full combined sitting, subject to the current booking fee and terms.

Will the other candidate's English affect my result?

No. Official Life Skills guidance assesses each candidate on their own performance. Still practise turn-taking so the paired phases feel natural.
