The GRE General Test at Home is required for thousands of graduate, business, and law school programs worldwide. Learn how Linguistic Academy supports your GRE preparation — Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.

What Is the GRE General Test at Home?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is a standardised admissions test for graduate and business school programs. The at-home version allows you to take the test remotely with a live proctor. The test was shortened in September 2023 to approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes, making it significantly more efficient than earlier versions. It evaluates analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills.

2026 Test Format

The GRE General Test has three sections. Analytical Writing: one section with one Issue essay task (30 minutes), measuring critical thinking and analytical writing. Verbal Reasoning: two sections (approximately 27 minutes each), measuring reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary in context. Quantitative Reasoning: two sections (approximately 23 minutes each), measuring basic math skills, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. A calculator is provided on screen. The test does not have a speaking or listening component.

Scoring

Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored on a 130–170 scale in 1-point increments. Analytical Writing is scored on a 0–6 scale in half-point increments. Your total score ranges from 260 to 340 (Verbal + Quant). Scores are valid for five years. Most graduate programs look for competitive scores based on their specific requirements. ScoreSelect allows you to choose which scores to send to schools.

Acceptance

The GRE is accepted by thousands of graduate, business, and law school programs worldwide, including most universities in the United States and Canada. Many business schools accept the GRE for MBA programs, and law schools increasingly accept it for JD admissions.
