What Is PTE Express (PTE Academic)?
PTE Academic is a fully computer-based English proficiency test developed by Pearson. The test is entirely AI-scored with human review checkpoints, providing fast and objective results. It takes approximately 2 hours with no breaks and is known for its quick turnaround — scores are typically available within 48 hours. From August 2025, Pearson introduced hybrid scoring where AI handles fluency and pronunciation while human reviewers assess content relevance and originality.
2026 Test Format
The test has three parts. Part 1: Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes) includes Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarise Written Text, Write Essay, and two new question types — Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Part 2: Reading (29–30 minutes) includes multiple choice, re-order paragraphs, and fill in the blanks. Part 3: Listening (30–43 minutes) includes summarise spoken text, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, select missing word, highlight incorrect words, and write from dictation. A total of 52–64 questions across 20–22 question types.
Scoring
PTE uses a 10–90 scoring scale for overall and communicative skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening). Scores also include enabling skills (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse). High-value tasks like Repeat Sentence, Read Aloud, Describe Image, and Write from Dictation carry significant weight. In 2026, the hybrid scoring model penalises memorised templates and rewards natural, original language. The test uses partial credit scoring and integrated scoring across multiple skills.
Acceptance
PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of programs across the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. It is also approved for Australian student visas and skilled migration (PR) applications. Many Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs accept PTE for visa purposes.
