Before you buy a DET credit

Check acceptance and setup first. A certified score only helps if your program accepts DET for your intake, and if you can meet the dual-camera rules on test day.

1. Acceptance

Check your exact program

Acceptance is program-level. Official materials cite more than 6,500 programs. Verify on your school page or ask admissions in writing. University admissions and visa rules are separate questions.

2. Score target

Know the overall score you need

DET reports an overall score from 10 to 160 plus individual and integrated subscores. Use the number your program publishes. Do not guess from a friend’s score alone.

3. Credits and timing

21 days to finish after purchase

One purchase is one credit. A discounted 2-test bundle gives two credits. You get up to three starts per credit to finish and upload. You may purchase up to three tests in any 30-day period, and must wait for a submitted test’s result before taking another.

4. Practice first

Take the free official practice test

The free practice test is unlimited, about 45 minutes, and shows an estimated score range only. It is not certified. Use the same kind of computer you will use for the real exam.

Buying a credit does not guarantee a certified score. Rule or tech problems can use an attempt without a shareable result. Serious misconduct can expire a credit or block testing.

At-home setup and test rules

Most failed certifications come from setup and room rules, not from English alone. Rehearse the dual-camera layout before you spend a credit.

Technical requirements

ComputerWindows 10+ or macOS 10.15+ laptop or desktop. Desktop app only.
UnsupportedChromebook, tablets as the test device, phones as the primary device, ChromeOS, Linux, and virtual machines.
First camera and audioBuilt-in or attached computer camera, microphone, and speakers. No headphones.
Second cameraA smartphone or tablet must record your entire computer screen and keyboard continuously for the whole test.Phone angle and interruptions are a common reason results are not certified.
InternetStable connection. Help Center interruption guidance cites at least 2 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload.
IDGovernment-issued photo ID with clear name, date of birth, face, and expiry. Blurry ID can often be resubmitted without a full retake.

Official launch flow

1
Create your account and buy a credit

Purchase on englishtest.duolingo.com. Complete the certified test within 21 days. For a bundle, the second credit’s 21-day window starts after the first result.

2
Install the desktop app

Use the official Windows or macOS app. Do not plan around a browser-only sitting.

3
Connect the phone or tablet camera

Follow the desktop app’s QR instructions. DET is gradually moving candidates from a mobile-browser flow to its mobile app, so use the path shown on your device. Frame the entire screen and keyboard, enable Do Not Disturb, and do not touch or cover the camera during the test.

4
Complete every onboarding scan

Check camera, microphone, and speakers; complete phone-based face and ID verification; scan both ears; record a slow 360° room view; and scan the area behind the computer. Then mount the second camera and review the rules.

5
Finish in one sitting

Reserve a full uninterrupted hour. Close other programs. Do not start if someone may enter the room.

Room and conduct rules

Alone in a private roomNo other person may be seen, heard, or interact with you. Prevent walk-ins and background voices.
Face and mouth visibleKeep your face, ears, eyes, and mouth visible. Do not look away except when typing.
No notes or extra devicesNo paper, notes, extra screens, or other devices in reach. No predictive text or grammar tools.
Speak only when instructedDo not talk until the task asks you to. Headphones are not allowed.
Payment noteMajor cards are supported. Alipay is available in China according to Help Center payment guidance.
Security outcomesYou get up to three starts per credit to complete and upload. Misconduct can expire the credit, suspend testing, or permanently block you.
Do not begin a paid attempt with a shaky phone mount, notifications on, or an untested computer. Fix the dual-camera setup first.

Scoring on the 10 to 160 scale

Your overall score averages Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, then rounds to the nearest 5. You also get integrated subscores: Literacy (Reading + Writing), Comprehension (Reading + Listening), Conversation (Speaking + Listening), and Production (Speaking + Writing). Closed items compare your answers to correct responses (partial credit possible). Open responses use a grading engine for content, coherence, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation as relevant. The final Writing and Speaking Samples are scored into their individual and integrated subscores and are also shared with recipients.

Move the slider in 5-point steps. Band labels are study-planning aids, not official Duolingo titles. Your institution’s published requirement is the only cutoff that matters.

Results, sharing, retakes, and validity

Plan your application calendar around review time, not only the adaptive hour.

Standard resultsResults are typically ready within two days. You receive an email when they are available.
Faster ResultsOptional add-on aims for results within 12 hours with the same review rigor. It is not a certification guarantee and is non-refundable.
Score validityCertified results remain valid for two years. After that you cannot share or view the certificate, and institutions lose access.
Sending scoresShare through the official Share Score flow. Help Center lets you select up to 40 institutions, and you can add more later while you remain under 40. Above 40 requires support and is not guaranteed. There is no per-report fee. You can share with up to 40 institutions in the Share Score flow.
RetakesBuy a new credit when you need another certified result. You may purchase up to three tests in any 30-day period and must wait for a submitted result before testing again. A credit has up to three starts, but two rule violations on one credit expire it, and possible or evident misconduct can expire it immediately.
Visa and immigrationDo not assume a university-accepting DET score is valid for a visa file. Check the destination country’s current rules separately.

Final checklist

Complete these on the same computer, phone, and network you will use for the certified test.

Immediately before starting

Start only when dual-camera setup and room rules are solid. A delayed start is cheaper than an uncertified credit.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Duolingo English Test?

About one hour of uninterrupted free time for onboarding, the scored adaptive test, and the writing and speaking samples.

How much does the DET cost?

A single certified test is $70 USD. A discounted 2-test bundle is also available. The free practice test costs nothing.

What changed in July 2025?

From 1 July 2025, Interactive Speaking is live: one set of 6 to 8 spoken questions with 35 seconds per response. It replaced Listen, Then Speak. Read Aloud was removed. Read, Then Speak remains.

Do I need a second camera?

Yes. Besides your computer camera, a phone or tablet must record your entire screen and keyboard for the whole sitting. Weak phone framing is a frequent reason results are not certified.

When will I get my DET results?

Standard results usually arrive within two days. Faster Results targets 12 hours for an extra fee, uses the same review process, and does not guarantee certification.

How is the overall DET score calculated?

The overall score averages Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, then rounds to the nearest 5 on the 10 to 160 scale. Integrated subscores report Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production.

How many institutions can I send scores to?

Help Center sharing lets you select up to 40 institutions, then add more later while under that cap. Above 40 needs support and is not guaranteed. There is no per-report fee.

How long are DET scores valid?

Certified results are valid for two years. After expiry you cannot share or view the certificate, and institutions lose access to it.

Is the DET accepted for visas?

Do not treat university acceptance as visa acceptance. Some destinations may allow DET for certain routes and many do not. Check the destination country’s current immigration rules first.
